I should add this comment. I have a pair of bikes, same size, same maker, same color even, different fork crowns. Between these bikes I can tell a difference in this way, the bike with the twin plate crown is more compliant fore and aft, and on most surfaces smoother riding than the bike with the sand cast (Fischer) crown.

My view for steel forks of the same basic configuration, the Crown is the thing.
