I would hazard a guess Alan used round as they threaded and bonded them.

Teledyne had some beefy round blades too, and those forks deflected quite a bit ABOVE the rake curve, my guess was the rake curve work hardened the blades. You got used to it, but unnerving until you did.

The above are both of different materials, so the comparison to steel is strained.
