No, more likely it is that provocation drives the rage of a motorist to want to "teach a lesson" to a cyclist, only for that raged driver to do a poor job of driving, with the end result being a collision. But even that I doubt... more likely, distracted motorists are just not paying attention and hit someone.
Frankly, in the case of rage, at least you know the motorist is looking at you... in the case of distraction, you have no idea what the motorist is doing/planning.
And certainly you can't deny that road rage exists... There are actual news reports of car to car incidents based on road rage.

But of course, as always, since no organization is actively investigating and recording cycling incidents, we have no real data on which to base any speculation. (that doesn't mean that such incidents do not happen)
