That's it -- the only compelling reason to do this would be to reduce asymmetric dish for stronger wheels. You'd still have the potential issue of bent/broken freewheel axles.

I think if you're going to go to the effort, you might as well treat yourself and build up a new wheel with a 130mm-spaced 7-speed freehub. Same strong(er) wheel, obviates the bent axle problem, gives you another cog, and great-condition hubs can be found cheap because the rest of the world has moved on to even more speeds.
