We usually carry 6' cable and a medium weight lock, and use them. However, we are not paranoid abut our bikes getting stolen. We have locked out bikes to a campground fence early in the morning, jumped a train that took us 300 miles from the campground, and returned about 10:00 PM. Just recently we locked my wife's, daughter's and my bike together in Victoria, BC, and spent several hours roaming about the city. It would take a couple of really strong dudes to pick up that bundle of bikes and cart them off. A professional thief would probably get them regardlesss of the of the lock. I'm not sure I'd do that in Eugene or Portland, Oregon.
