Since I will be 75 next month, I really dont care to be involved in all that information. Further I really dont care what anyone thinks about what I ride, where I ride, and how fast I ride. I just ride for the exercise, joy, and the fun of it. How many here do the same.
Congrats on riding at 75, that's a big deal!!
36 gears? what the? I have a 20 speed but for what reason? I only got it because it's a new bike and they come that way today otherwise I don't need that many gears. I have older bikes with 10, 12, 14, (touring bikes with triples not included) and use to ride them up and down mountains in S Calif without ever thinking I needed another 10 gears or so.
I don't buy into a whole lot of electronic crap either, GPS and wattage output is my least thing I would ever get, and besides a paper map is actually easier because their no buttons to push and screens to scroll. Some of the stuff you mentioned like cadence and especially HRM is only for those who wish to do better by monitoring the stats and knowing where their at for max workout. Even though I have that stuff I ride a lot without using any of it. But if I decide to go back into racing and join the Geritol Racing Crew (just funning) then I probably get more serious about all that HRM stuff, but for right now due to time constraints of having to work I ride mostly for fun, and immediately after I retire I want to take a cross country touring trip. After that I'll consider whether or not I want to race.
Everyone has a different idea of what fun is to them. Riding for fun without all the restraints is great for a lot people, for others riding with technology to improve themselves and or see improvement is fun. Just depends where a person is at. I would say most of the time as of right now I ride for fun.
