I have read various regional type ride reports and as I posted a second ago the faster the group, the nicer the guys in my experience.
I get the impression that faster groups take themselves too seriously.

I rode with the Stanford cycling team a few times when I was commuting in jeans/t-shirt/toe clips. They seemed too serious to talk to that guy who didn't spend thousands of dollars and take 20 minutes to change before a ride. The meetup.com group around here is really slow but really friendly. But then, I have a pretty extreme anti-conformist mentality. Now that I succumbed to peer (and taint) pressure and dress like a cyclist minus the glasses/gloves, I don't get that "we're better than you" impression as much. I'm not even riding a Motobecane anymore.
