The first photo seems to show the bearing not fully seating into the machined end of the steerer. It looks like there is machined open space beneath it. I'd have to have the bike in front of me to really say more. One problem with these newer integrated headsets is that not many shops have the right cutters for correcting things. It could be that the machining was not done well. I wouldn't call this a defective frame though. The other possibility that i can think of is if the headset is using the wrong bearing and it's angled seating bevels are not the right degrees. Andy.
