But the Zen feeling of 'being one with the bike' is worth it. I now have the clips set on their loosest setting - they are easy to disengage, and I've not had them accidentally disengage at an inopportune moment, e.g. over a bump or up a hill.
Started riding when I was 58yo on a mtn bike. When I got my road bike, I started with "clipless" (which I think you are referencing when you say "toe clips") right off, and have loved them ever since. I have fallen twice - during the first month - and never since then - at least as a result of the clipless pedals. I am 74 now.
