Well, that pattern can be achieved even if you're consistently one step off from where you should be at the rim.

Wheel lacing isn't a black-or-white thing, there are more than one option that will result in a serviceable wheel. And as long as your creation is "good enough", the benefits from going to "better" will be quite marginal.
