Interesting.

When I moved to Missouri in 1979, we still had blue laws. Most stores were closed on Sundays and there were restrictions on what you could buy in grocery stores that didn't make a lot of logical sense. We had a state wide referendum to determine if we should keep the blue laws and keeping the status quo passed by about 2 to 1. The vote wasn't even close. Never-the-less, within a year the state legislature voted to ignore the majority and to overturn the blue laws.

You're right. It is about power and politics.
