This is an interesting thread. I've also been going through fork replacement ideas for my Univega GT. Early 80's model. I've looked at a lot of CF forks with canti bosses, but they're all threadless. Which is fine. Actually, I'd like to use a threadless set up. I have an old Salsa 1" stem I'd like to use. Problem is the original fork has an axle to crown height of 380mm while all the 1" CF forks w/bosses are upwards of 400mm. Rake in the lower to mid 40's range. Not sure what the rake is on the original Univega fork, though. Nevertheless, something tells me using a fork with that much of a difference in A/C height is going to adversely affect how the bike will handle.
Now, I'm not attached to using a CF fork, though it'd be nice if it were of good quality. But, I've also looked at steel fork replacements. Again, all the steel forks with bosses I've seen have a 400mm A/C height. There just doesn't seem to be any winners for a replacement. Unless.......
Someone posted in this thread some figures for trail according the rake and A/C height. How is that arrived at? I'm running some 700x40c tires right now with an old Schwinn LeTour fork. The steerer is threaded but is long enough to use a shim and 1 1/8 stem to accommodate compact FSA bars with 31.8 clamp. The fork is almost 1cm taller in A/C and appears to have more rake, as well. It works because it'll clear the tire without gravel catching under the crown and no ill effects in handling, either. In fact, it feels just right in every riding condition. So, I'm hoping by knowing how to determine figures I might be able to find a new fork with bosses that will work on this frame.
Oh, and best I can tell, the HT and ST angles match my old Trek 614 at 73*ea. I used an angle finder to compare.
