Definitely an illusion. The timing chain runs on the left side of the right crank, just like it would if there was a chainring on it and it is no worse than the arrangement on the other side. I'm more concerned by giving the #2 child control over the third brake.

I agree that #1 child needs to be light, that's a lot of faith to put in a stoker stem.

I'd also prefer to see foot straps on the other pedals.
