I don't know if I'd go quite that far, but I've got to give the guy his due. I saw he and his band perform at Farm Aid in 1999. Lots of big names there, but they stole the show.
P.S. Unfortunately, he had started smoking again... I heard he'd had a heart attack, and had quit, and was warning other people against smoking. Folks, if you don't smoke, never, ever start. It's a hard habit to break. (I 'spect I'm preaching to the choir, here.)
