We do have to be careful about "crying wolf" too often and making every small defect sound like a death knell. However, there really are dangerous failures that do warrant the "stop riding it immediately" response. Cracked forks, some frame breaks or cracks, a cracked crankarm or pedal spindle, etc. certainly require immediate retirement of that part. The difficulty is knowing where to draw the line.
