Same thing I hope to achieve when I do an "upgrade" on any one of my bikes. Could be performance reasons, could be that I like the upgrade more(like when I went from ultegra cranks to Dura ace cranks on my Ibis Road bike) or sometimes I just like to change things for the hell of it. I'm a bike dude, I have 5 bikes crammed into the livingroom of my apartment and two bikes(including this tandem) at my parents. I work at a bike shop. I like to tinker with my bikes.

This is kind of a mixture of two and three.



It came(and is equipped with currently) Sora Shifters, a Deore Rd, a 105 FD, but it has a Chris King wheelset(angry bees!). It also included Easton carbon captain/stoker bars, a flightdeck computer and a nice pair of Crank bros Candy pedals. All this for only 750. Components aside, it has a nice True Temper steel frame and feels very solid.

It is a tad big. It is hard to find a tandem my size. I ride a 52 and they just don't make captain sizes that small, smallest I have come across in off the peg tandems is 54. The way this is setup it fits, but has a stumpy stem on the front. I am planning to upgrade the whole frame at a later date, probably custom unless I can find one used in my size.

I never find upgrading components on a frame to be a waste. Unless it's something that has to stay with that frame, you can always move it over.
