As to the brake issue, it may have depended on which DS model you are talking about. My 8.3 came with Tektro Novela disks and within a month they started squealing and chattering a lot. Very annoying. I tried adjusting them but lost the battle. I ended up swapping them out with Avid BB 7's and haven't heard a squeak since. I think the issue was more related to the Tektro brakes than how they are mounted, maybe it was a combination of both. The 2012 8.5 has Shimano hydros, so they may behave very differently.
