When I really need to lash something down, I use 1" tubular webbing, at 4500 lbs breaking strength. It does the job



All my climbing protection is laced with 5 mm spectra cord. As was stated, you just learn the knots that work with the cord, e.g., triple wrap double fisherman's knot rather than a double wrap.
