Does every house within 5 miles of work cost that much? You probably work in a very expensive area like a downtown financial district? If you added together the expenses for the 20k car and the 200k house, how would tha compare with the 400k house payments?
Don't know his area but that happened in LA. Homes in Lancaster/Palmdale are averaging about 250k while Zillow reports the average in LA is 477k. The difference in monthly payments is 2.3k. You could get one heck of a nice car for $2300.00 a month.
