Okay, so it sounds like I am good with the qr spindle sticking out about a cm and the axle bolt ending flush with the dropout. Here's a photo of the "so far" - dropout, no RD yet.

Now I'm wondering if my rear dropout is missing a hole for the claw adapter (seems like there is an "X" stamped on the dropout right where that hole should be).
