+1. Even knowing that a car has crossed into the bike lane wouldn't be much help.
Be alert, don't zone out, and you should be fine. Music in one ear, and the other ear for your surroundings.
Exactly how I do it. I keep the bud in my right ear and my left free to hear traffic since that is the side which vehicles come around.
