I really like the Ellipse as a combo training/race wheel, ESPECIALLY for new racers.
The Ellipse weigh about the same a typical DeepV wheelset, but use 20 bladed spokes which comes out pretty aero. I set a PB (at the time) for my flying 200M on a set of Ellipse. Plus they are very strong. I rode a set of Ellipse on a commuter fixed gear on the rough streets of Baltimore for almost a year.
The only down side is the "campy" threaded lockring. So standard Dura Ace lock rings won't work.
I don't think there is a significant advantage to using Dura Ace loose ball hubs over quality sealed bearing hubs. The sealed bearing hubs don't need maintenance (cleaning, greasing, repacking) like the DA do. Also, DA hubs tend to "self-tighten" on the rear after a long time. This results in bearings being too tight. You'll need cone wrenches to adjust. Not a big deal, but that's part of owning them.
