Maybe put a small plate under the clamp? The old (60's-70's) Raleighs came with those. It was an oval piece of metal about 1.5"x3/4" that was curved to fit the stay.
Good recollection.
Distributing the stress over a larger area w/ this fab can/might avoid denting a stay that was not designed for this application. Those fitted plates were OEM for a good reason.
