If you look at the etymology, we know the word derives form the Old French "vendage" (influenced by vintener vintner), derived from the Latin vindēmia, from "vīnum" wine, grape + "dēmere" to take away (from dē- away + emere to take from the the vine).

So obviously it can only be vintage if it's old, French, and more commonly ridden by winos.
