For some of us: when we hit and surpass 6th decade, doing and experience become more important than detailed accomplisments. What you have described seems to me a most healthy transition. And if you should cycle back into a former mode — so be it. It may shine in a new way. Dude — just ride and report back.
I remember that Neville Shute (Mr Norway's pen name) was about as passionate about flying, designing and building airplanes as anyone on the planet. In later life he moved his life from Britain to Australian and became one of the most enthralling story-tellers of his era. He never forgot flying even then [The Rainbow and the Rose].
You are one of us, and we are surly not going to worry if you are not drilling holes. Ride some miles ... and take a camera. And best wishes in the new year.
