This may or may not be of interest, but I rode with this for at least 1000 miles without issue:

8 speed ergo shifters
8 speed Campagnolo racing triple derailleurs
7 speed Suntour freewheel
8 speed chain

With no modifications to any parts, everything indexed properly.
