Montega , use a crankarm puller , remove the crankarms , on the nondrive side ( the left side if you were sitting on the bike ) remove the locking ring , go to the drive side (the right side of the bike ) use the tool ( parktool bb -22 ) turn it counter clockwise to make sure it tight , now with the same tool move back to the left side turn that cup clockwise to remove any play in the axle but still spin with a little drag to it , one found hold the cup there and replace the locking ring without moving the cup ,then replace the crankarms . If overhauling it , do the same but remove both cups , clean ,repack with fresh grease and new bearings ( 9 1/4' balls to each side ) and put the cups and axle back in and do the adjustment as I stated before.
