Two-wheeled locomotion

For Mary Ann Blackstone and Ashley Odell, two-wheeled locomotion is the answer.

Blackstone, who lives in the Historic District, rides her bike almost everywhere she goes "unless I have to go to the southside ... or unless I have to pickup something I can't carry."

Odell, who lives on Wilmington Island, rides about a mile to work daily. That's no big deal, she figures; she used to ride from near Savannah Mall to the CVS pharmacy on Bull Street.

She has two trucks in Texas, but with gas costing what it does, "there's no point to bringing them out here."

Bicycle sales are up

Bill Sellers, manager of the Bicycle Link shop on Broughton Street, said September is usually the best year for bike sales.

This September, Sellers said, was the best September during the eight years the Bicycle Link, which also has a southside location, has been downtown.

Sellers thinks the lack of parking downtown probably is the biggest thing driving up sales, but adds that gasoline prices generate additional buyers.
