I've never ridden up that way.
My normal commute is from Old Town Alexandria to Mile 5 on the C&O. A great resource is the C&O Companion app on bikewashington.org. Lots of free camping all along the C&O, but trains roll through the area pretty frequently, so bring ear plugs or pick your stops carefully. My favorite campsite is Killiansburg Caves at Mile 75, which is very quiet and has lots of room. Near Antietam battlefield.
