If you want to venture off of Hwy 2 for the Iowa portion, look at RAGBRAI routes. They take a new route every year across over secondary paved roads. And every county has a couple parks for camping.
Hwy 2 would probably be a decent route, but I'm saying there are resources if you want to wander off that route. If you want more specific info on Central, Eastern, and Northeastern Iowa, then PM me. I've only biked western IA on RAGBRAI.
