The larger bearings are able to sustain more vertical loading which is doubly important as everyone has moved to cartridge bearings. For the road or track rider they are completely pointless.
Unnecessary perhaps...but if they are stronger (-stiffer)
and lighter...-why not? Don't all these things make it a 'superior' design for any type of riding? Also, are there any track cranks/BB that use outboard bearings? Does FSA make any?
