so true, my recent hybrid was a Gary Fisher Montare. I found myself riding on roads and bike paths. Enentually I realized that i should be riding a road bike and thats what I now ride the most. Start off with ahybrid. If a mountain uke is what you eventually gravitate towords than make it your second bike.
