Both road and mtn deraliers have the same cable pull so no problems with indexing. What is different is that road deraliers work with a higher spring tension than with mtn deraliers.

Many here have used mtn shifters with road deraliers without any problem however Shimano only reccomends the use of its road specific flat bar shifters with road deraliers. There may be long term reliability issues.
