I have never ridden a bike with 45mm of trail. Does it feel really twitchy once you remove the loaded front bag? I had a custom bike built last year for my partner. It sits at around 55mm of trail. A small front bag up front with not much in it. I don't ride it much, but when I do one word comes to mind as far as handling: Perfect.
I have several bikes set up this way with 45 or so mm of trail. They feel the same to me loaded or unloaded, and I like it very much.
