With presta valves on road bikes, I've never tried a separate gauge that I could get to work reliably without letting out a significant amount of air.
Beto/Panasonic/Price Point is an excellent pressure gauge that does not let nearly any air out and it is given away nearly for free! I've got 3 of those, just in case
