This question gets asked all the time. You might want to try the search function for more info.

In a nutshell, mileage depends on road/trail condition, rider strength, maintenance frequency, ect. To know if your chain needs to be replaced, measure it. Measure from the centerline of one pin to another pin 12" away, if the elongation exceeds 1/16" the chain should be changed. If the elongation is 1/8" or more, you most likely will need a new cog set as well as a chain.
