No, just lens characteristics. He got in that tight because that was the composition he wanted (I guess), but his lens couldn't focus any closer than the links (or that's where the auto focus sensor caught first). Depth of field goes out the window when you're shooting that close (even if your lens is closed down all the way) so that's why so much in the shot is out of focus.
