I think the same thing that happened to us happened to them. I was with a group of about 7. We rolled to the stop. The front guys yelled clear, car coming fast. We stopped. The car coming fast slowed and stopped even though they didn't have a stop sign. A car from the other direction never stopped. It does get confusing when this happens. I dislike when cars give the right of way even though they clearly have it. Ride defensively and take precautions.
I looked up the intersection in the article and remember coming through there - I was thinking at the time it was a rather dangerous intersection to include in such a large organized ride. Traffic coming FAST from both directions, no stop or light. PLUS, there are trees obstructing the vision of traffic approaching from the left. Something tells me they will change the route next year, or provide traffic control at this intersection. I'm surprised they didn't put a traffic control officer here to begin with - surely there were other intersections that DID have traffic control that benefited far less!
