All I can say to this is that I can no longer pedal below 60 rpm without significant knee pain, but I still like to climb really big hills. Come to Colorado for one of the big summer tours and we'll show you what low gears are for.

I don't disagree with what you wrote at all, for one simple reason: you know what works for you, and that you need 1:1. You aren't telling everyone they need 1:1. You know that your knees hurt at 60 rpm. You are not saying that everyone's knees will hurt at 60 rpm.
When this forum gives advice, it can be brilliant. When it states things as absolutes, it can be dim. Just my opinion. Enjoy your new bike.
