It's simply more cost effective to churn out plain vanilla wheels "built" by robots.
It's only cost effective if you can sell them. If your wheel design had a high failure rate I'd think any wheel builder would change their design.

The OP, by the way, is asking about a pretty plain vanilla wheelset 36 spoke 3 cross. It's his first wheel build too. That being the case, I don't understand this fixation with 2-3 different spoke gauges and chasing the windup around. Sometimes boreing is good.
