For what is worth, my youngest, 3 at that time, was determined to learn to ride without training wheels but was really struggling. After several failed attempts I got the idea to remover her pedals. She sat on the seat with her feet flat on the ground and facing downhill. I had her lift her feet just enough that she could roll forward. If she leaned to one side or started going to fast she could put her feet down. About two hours later we riding together without training wheels.
that's encouraging, I will definitely have to spend saturday or sunday afternoon trying the DIY balance bike thing with her. My daughter is a bit confused at the kick back brakes too but i think that shouldn't be a problem.
