www.warmshowers.org. There are a lot of people who can host you and/or allow you to camp on their property. Sign up for free. I'm a warmshowers host but you would not want to ride in my area in the summer if you think Kansas, etc is hot...

About the hot weather - I don't really have any idea how hot it is down there but I looking at some google streetview pictures it doesn't seem like the most enjoyable place for several hour bike ride =D . But maybe I'm totally wrong
