If it makes you feel any better there's a chance that you could have bought from a horrible local store that would have rejected your warranty claim, claimed you broke it through abuse, and made you pay full retail on a replacement wheel. Maybe not likely, but a possibility.
I just spoke with customer service where I bought it - they told me to take it to my LBS to have it looked at and that they would cover the cost. That's really excellent service, I must say.
