I knew better than to read yet another one of those articles.

1. "Registering for a triathlon, I took my first ride in decades."

Dingbat.

2. "The anecdotes mounted..."

No shortage of Dingbats out there.

3. "I see cyclists running stop signs like immortal, entitled fools."

I don't see cyclists in that light. No one in my city stops for anything unless they have to. They simply look both ways before crossing the street. Just a practical use of hard-earned momentum. But how would she know. Stationary bikes in basements don't enjoy momentum.

4. "So I understand the impulse to see cyclists as recreational risk takers who deserve their fate."

Oh...really??? In that case, every single motorist in my city deserves a grizzly fate because they roll through stop signs, stop their cars in pedestrian crossings, and speed like immortal, entitled fools!?

5. "...jurors “just think, well, I could make the same mistake. So they don’t convict.” That’s why police officers and prosecutors don’t bother making arrests. Most cops spend their lives in cars, too, so that’s where their sympathies lie."

OK...save this one for later...

6. "Every time you get on a bike, from this moment forward, obey the letter of the law in every traffic exchange everywhere to help drivers (and police officers) view cyclists as predictable users of the road who deserve respect."

YOU FIRST. See #5 above. If I go first I will be too dead to enjoy the alleged benefits of putting myself at extra risk obeying traffic laws not designed for human powered vehicles. And I don't need bike lanes. I need Justice on the front end. Then I might consider stopping for a few stop signs now and then. If The Law does not protect me, then those laws are invalid globally.
