I had issues with mine as well. It kept wanting to pop out the side instead of going through the routing. It finally just worked. Luckily I didn't fray the cable end in any attempts. I had to go without the outer casing end cap on that end because it was causing friction that would not allow it to shift.
do you mean the ferrule for the housing? you definitely want a ferrule on the end of your shift cable, especially the front shifter
