105 doesn't concede anything in terms of durability, mainly weight. It's a great group and you can always add the bling later on if you feel the need.
Although, (and no offense to Trek 100 owners), if you keep riding and really get into it you'll be wanting a new frame in a matter of months. I suppose, though, if you're asking for gifts you're not paying for the parts and the frame, so go to it!
