Check that your tires have sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Wear a helmet.
Just this past weekend, I became certified, but in the past, I've shared with anyone who cared to listen that being visible and predictable were the best habits for cycling on roadways. Those are covered by
