Driving through Italy is an awesome experience. A few years I ago I bought a BMW and did a Euro Delivery to pickup in Munich. Drove to Zurich and then via the Gotthard pass down to Italy. I was totally impressed by the cyclists climbing up the pass. Drove down via Lake Como, Florence, Siena, through Tuscany and then back up via Bergamo, Verona, Riva di Solto up into the Dolomites where there was snow in the first week of September.
Beautiful place, amazing wine, awesome food and friendly people.
We left the kids at home with the grandparents and drove without any plans or reservations and drove and stopped whenever and wherever we wanted. Awesome experience.

Enjoy your trip!

Beautiful, yes, but I could not sit down and have coffee by the sea or anything like that. This time I am renting a car then driving at our own pace. Will visit Venice, Verona, Bologna (Ducati and Ferrari Factory), Cinque Terre, Naples, Pompeii, Salerno (amalfi coast), Nusco (my Fiancee's Hometown in Avelino), and Bari. I think it is going to be an amazing trip.. Starting to get excited just thinking about it. I think this time I'll get to hang out with the locals, as well as go with people that understand the language and drive ourself to where WE WANT! not the tour guides
