Early 60's Frejus project
So I was at our local monthly flea market and wasn't expecting to see any interesting bicycle related goodness but decide what the heck. I know an older fellow usually brings the same bicycle stuff but nothing of interest normally. Though he had a PX10 on his table and I decided to ask how much but it was a bit more then I was expecting. Then I noticed he had two other frames behind his table. One was a custom built GT road frame that was fillet brazed and had a number plate mount under the top tube. He proceeded to tell me a short story about it that was pretty interesting. Then he went on told me he used to be a mechanic for some pro teams back in the day and actually knew Tom Simpson. He was an Irish fellow probably in his 70's and has been in the industry for many moons.
Then he pulled out this Frejus and said the serial number puts it at a 1965. I'm not questioning the guy cause he really knew his stuff. So we chatted for a bit and then my children were growing restless and I came home with a new project that I wasn't expecting before I left the house. So it's a little earlier then I'm used to so I'm wondering what kind of components would be period correct for this. It's a Reynolds 531 frame with Campag dropouts fully chromed under the emerald green'ish paint. It's got quite a bit of ummm character to say the least so no flashy parts but I want them period correct. probably 45% of the chrome is gone on the lugs and paint has seen better days but it's got a really nice headbadge with all the paint.
I've got a spare set of Record high flange hub but laced up with some Wolber Aspin's but would look out of place since they have that hard ano finish on them. I'm not looking to go crazy on this bike but a nice ride able period correct bike.
Serial number is 108234 so looking on the CR site it's correct about the age of it. I'll posts up some pics in the morning.
