I have used cages on my commuter and road bikes for years, but I find that I like having a gigantic bmx style platform pedal to use on my fixie. At first I used just the bare platform just to get used to riding fixed, but now that I'm comfortable with it I would really like to have some form of foot retention in place. I have tried some basic Origin8 straps to little affect. When I have to straps open wide enough to slide my shoe into them the straps themselves will not hold any sort of shape and make it impossible to insert the second foot once pedaling. I would really appreciate some sort of suggestion as to a brand or style of strap that would perform better in this regard. Thank you.
Those Origin 8 straps are known to be pretty terrible, especially when they wear in and soften up a little. Fyxation Gates straps are designed to be cinched a little tighter in the front and wider in the back (the part where your foot slides in) and they do keep their shape very well so they may be a little better.
As a sidenote, a kid recently came into the shop saying how much he hated the Fyxation straps and upon inspection, he had the left one on the right side and vise versa. As soon as I switched them, he was a happy camper.
